Statement: JMBF Gravely Concerns over BSF’s Killing of Bangladeshi Child at Moulovibazar Border

Paris, France; October 16, 2023: France-based human rights organization, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), is deeply concerned about the killing of a Bangladeshi child, Ferdaus Ahmed (14), by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Lalarchak border in Kulaura Upazila of Moulovibazar district.

JMBF strongly condemns the incident of killing a child and calls for the BSF to stop all kinds of border killings while carrying out their duties in accordance with international law and principles immediately.

According to reports published in various newspapers in Bangladesh on October 1st, in the afternoon, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot child Ferdaus Ahmed, a 14 years old child, while he was located between border pillar numbers 1857 and 1858 of Lalarchak Border in Kulaura Upazila under Moulovibazar district. Later, he was admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical Hospital by his relatives after rescuing him from being laid down on the ground with a bullet in his body for treatment. Sadly, he died on October 3 at the hospital during treatment.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, a prominent human rights lawyer and Founder President of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), strongly protests the BSF's killing of a Bangladeshi child at the indo bangla border and urges the BSF to refrain from indiscriminate firing at the border in future.

Advocate Shahanur Islam also calls on the Indian government to take the incident of killing seriously and ensure the punishment of the accused BSF personnel after a proper investigation and trial in accordance with criminal law and international standards.

Advocate Shahanur Islam stated that the killing of the Bangladeshi child by the BSF at the borders is not an isolated incident and a clear violation of international human rights law; and asked the BSF to immediately revise its policy regarding the use of firearms at the border.

Advocate Shahanur Islam also urges to ensure of physical and psychological integrity, as well as providing adequate financial compensation to the family members of the victim promptly.

In addition, Advocate Shahanur Islam calls on the international community to raise their voices to stop the use of lethal weapons at the Indo-Bangla border by the Indian Border Security Force immediately.
