Islamic Group Calls for Ban of Human Rights Activist and Lawyer Shahanur Islam, Alleging Western Agenda to Promote Homosexuality in Bangladesh

A Facebook user named "Mon Dey" has called for the ban of human rights activist and lawyer Shahanur Islam in Bangladesh, alleging that he is implementing a Western agenda to establish and legitimize the homosexual agenda in the country.

At the same time, he urges the necessary steps to ban Justice Makers Bangladesh, an organization founded by Shahanur Islam.

The Facebook group called Caravan, established under the slogan "Look at the world through the eyes of Islam," made the call on June 21, 2023, at 5:18 PM Bangladesh time.

In a write-up titled "Homosexuality on the way to legalization in Bangladesh?" from a fake Facebook ID called Mon Dey have called upon Ulema Keram, speakers, responsible imams, khatibs, online activists, Islamic groups and organizations, writers, guardians, and ordinary Muslims for measures to ban Shahanur Islam in Bangladesh.

In his writing, he mentioned that on April 12, 2023, Justice Makers Bangladesh, an organization working on the rights of homosexuals in Bangladesh, petitioned the President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and the Minister of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs to decriminalize homosexuality by repealing Article 377 of the Bangladesh Penal Code. As of June 21, 2023, 4:00 PM, 228 out of 500 people have signed the petition.

He also wrote that Shahanur Islam, the founder of Justice Makers Bangladesh, has been working to legalize homosexuality in Bangladesh for over a decade and has openly advocated for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) rights. Mr. Islam is going to publish a research paper titled "Critical Analysis of Violence against LGBTQI+ People in Bangladesh: Monitoring Online News Media in 2022" on June 22, 2023. It will be published at the "SaferToBeMe" Symposium jointly organized by ReportOut International and the University of Sunderland, which will discuss gay rights and development.

He also wrote that Shahanur Islam was the first person to speak in the Dutch Parliament about the constitutional recognition of homosexuals in Bangladesh. He has previously served as USAID's Prosecution Manager and is an international member of Amnesty International. His profile is featured on Frontline Defenders, an international platform for human rights activists, which is also vocal about gay rights.

He further wrote that Shahanur Islam's influence is significant at the international level. A look at some of his recent activities reveals the support he receives for his work on the LGBT agenda in Bangladesh.

On March 17, 2023, Shahanur Islam participated in a reception organized by the President of the Republic of France, Emmanuel Macron, at the Elysee Palace in Paris. The reception was held for fourteen human rights activists from around the world. There, he drew the French president's attention to the widespread human rights violations against ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities (including homosexuals) in Bangladesh and the criminalization of homosexuality. He requested the President of France to provide financial, moral, and technical support to his organization and fund projects related to his agenda and team training.

Moreover, on May 11, 2023, Shahanur Islam attended a discussion meeting held in Brussels, Belgium, with the participation of European human rights lawyers. The meeting aimed to review the current human rights situation in Bangladesh, and Shahanur Islam was the main speaker. In his speech, he expressed concern about the human rights situation in Bangladesh, including the rights of sexual minorities (homosexuals).

On June 5, 2023, Shahanur Islam participated in a lengthy conference in Strasbourg, France, with Dunja Mijatovic, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe.

Furthermore, on June 9, 2023, Shahanur Islam took part in a three-hour human rights dialogue at the Wilson Palace, the headquarters of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland. There, he discussed the current human rights situation in Bangladesh, including LGBT rights, in his speech.

He also mentioned that these activities demonstrate who is supporting Shahanur Islam in his work on the LGBT agenda in Bangladesh. There is no doubt that he speaks about gay rights in all these places.

Mon Dey called upon Bangladesh Ulamae Keram, speakers, responsible imams, khatibs, online activists, Islamic groups and organizations, writers, guardians, and ordinary Muslims from all walks of life to ban Shahanur Islam and speak out against all anti-Islamic activities. Besides demanding the ban of Justice Makers Bangladesh and Shahanur Islam, he also called for legislation to prevent online and offline promotion of homosexuality in Bangladesh.

Finally, he urged them to stand up now and take whatever necessary steps to resist LGBT rights as a religious war. He called on everyone to fight against Satan to save human civilization and the Muslim Ummah.

Already, 143 people have reacted to Man Dey's call, including liking his writing, and 128 have shared his post. Additionally, 39 people have made comments supporting his urges.
