Despite receiving immediate medical attention, he tragically succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the ICU of Chittagong Medical College Hospital on Wednesday, July 5, at 3 o'clock in the morning.
Suman Barua, the son of the deceased, revealed that his father had dedicated his life to religious practice for the past 16-17 years and had served as the Principal of Sravasti Vihar in Morichya for the last 7 years. Dharmajyoti had no known enmity with anyone, making this attack even more shocking and senseless. It is evident that this incident was an act of violence targeting him solely based on his religious affiliation.

গত ৬ জুলাই দৈনিক পূর্বকোন প্রত্রিকার অনলাইন ভার্ষনে প্রকাশিত খবরে জানা যায় যে, কক্সবাজারের উখিয়ায় রাতের আঁধারে দুর্বৃত্তদের হামলায় আহত বৌদ্ধ ভিক্ষু ধর্মজ্যোতি চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় মারা গেছেন। তিনদিন চিকিৎসাধীন থাকার পর বুধবার (৫ জুলাই) দিবাগত রাত ৩টায় চট্টগ্রাম মেডিকেল কলেজ (চমেক) হাসপাতালের আইসিইউতে তার মৃত্যু হয়।
ধর্মজ্যোতি উখিয়ার হলদিয়াপালং ইউনিয়নের মরিচ্যা শ্রাবস্তি বৌদ্ধবিহারের অধ্যক্ষ ছিলেন। রবিবার (২ জুলাই) রাতের তিনি আঘাতপ্রাপ্ত হন। পরদিন সকালে বৌদ্ধবিহারের একটি কক্ষ থেকে ধর্মজ্যোতিকে রক্তাক্ত অবস্থায় উদ্ধার হয়।
নিহতের ছেলে সুমন বড়ুয়া জানান, ১৬-১৭ বছর আগে ধর্ম পালনের উদ্দেশ্যে সংসার ত্যাগ করেন তাঁর বাবা। গত ৭ বছর ধরে তিনি মরিচ্যার শ্রাবস্তী বিহারের অধ্যক্ষের দায়িত্ব পালন করছিলেন। তার সঙ্গে কারও শত্রুতা ছিল না। রবিবার রাতে কে বা কারা ছুরিকাঘাত করে রক্তাক্ত অবস্থায় তাকে ফেলে যায়। পরে তাকে উদ্ধার করে কক্সবাজার সদর হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয়। সেখান থেকে উন্নত চিকিৎসার জন্য চট্টগ্রামে পাঠানো হয়। গতকাল বুধবার রাতে বাবার মৃত্যু হয়েছে।

বিচার ব্যবস্থার অপব্যবস্থাপনা ও আইনের শাসনহীনতার কারণে অধিকাংশ সময় ঘটনার সাথে জড়িত অপরাধীরা ধরা ছোঁয়ার বাহিরে থেকে যায়, তাই প্রকৃত অভিযুক্তদের দ্রুত চিহ্নিত পূর্বক গ্রেফতার করে বিচারে সোপর্দ করে দৃষ্টান্তমূলক শাস্তি প্রদানের জোর দাবী জানিয়েছেন অ্যাডভোকেট শাহানূর ইসলাম।
পাশাপাশি নিহতের পরিবারকে উপযুক্ত ক্ষতিপূরণ প্রদানসহ ভবিষ্যতে যেন এলাকার সংখ্যালঘু সম্প্রদায় কোন প্রকার ভয় ভীতি ছাড়া নির্বিঘ্নে তাদের ধর্ম পালন করতে পারে সেই পরিবেশের নিশ্চয়তার প্রদানের জন্য উপযুক্ত ব্যবস্থা গ্রহনের আহবান জানিয়েছে অ্যাডভোকেট শাহানূর ইসলাম।
অ্যাডভোকেট শাহানূর ইসলাম উক্ত ন্যাক্কারজনক ঘটনায় রাজনৈতিক প্রতিহিংসাবশত নিরীহ মানুষকে যেন হয়রানি না করা হয়, সে বিষয়েও প্রশাসনকে সতর্ক থাকার এবং সংখ্যালঘুদের স্বাধীনভাবে ধর্ম পালনের নিশ্চয়তা সহ জান মালের নিরাপত্তা বিধানের জন্য দ্রুত সংখ্যালঘু সুরক্ষা আইন প্রণয়ন ও বাস্তবায়নের জোড় দাবী জানিয়েছেন।
