Statement: JMBF's Deep Concern and Protest Regarding the Incident of 6 Bangladeshis Killed, 4 Injured, and 7 Arbitrarily Arrested by BSF in December!

Paris, France; December 31, 2023: France-based human rights organization, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), expresses grave concern and protests over the incident involving the killing of 6 Bangladeshi citizens through shooting, injuring 4 individuals by firing, and the arbitrary detention of 7 people by the Indian Border Guard Force (BSF) at the Bangladesh-India border in the last month (December).

Moreover, as the killing of unarmed Bangladeshi citizens by the BSF on the border constitutes a gross violation of international human rights law, the French-based human rights organization calls upon BSF members to exercise the utmost care in fulfilling their duties in accordance with international law.

According to various newspaper reports published in Bangladesh in December, JMBF learned that on December 29 at 9:30 pm, a Bangladeshi youth named Kawshar Ahmad (26), son of Ruson Mia of Dakshin Bagaia village of Rustumpur Union, was killed at the Bichhanakandi border in Sylhet. On December 16, Sajedur Rahman (27) and Khwaja Mainuddin (30), both cattle traders, were killed at Chuadanga Baradi border. On the night of December 3rd, Zahurul Islam (27) and Moklech (28) of Geruadangi village were killed at the Dabri border of Haripur upazila of Thakurgaon district by BSF. Rojibul Islam alias Rajan (30) of Nimail village of Parvatipur Union was shot dead by the Indian Border Guard Force (BSF) on the night of December 2 at Rokonpur Border in Radhanagar Union of Chapainawabganj.

Sujan of Gendukuri village of Tongbhanga union was injured by BSF shooting at the Gotamari border of Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat on the morning of December 15. Idrish Ali (30) of Barosa village of Amjankhor union in the Ratnai border area of Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon was injured due to BSF shooting on the night of December 03. Habibur Rahman alias Chhutu (32) of Nurpara village of Barashashi union in Boda upazila of Panchgarh district was shot and injured at the same border by the Indian Border Guard Force (BSF). On December 05 afternoon, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) intruded into the border pocket of Singimari Union in Hatibandha of Lalmonirhat, beating up an old woman named Zohra Begum, the wife of the deceased Chakaddir of the said village, and vandalizing her house.

On December 27 in the afternoon, while fishing in the Bay of Bengal near Mandarbaria in Sarankhola Range of Sundarban East Forest Division of Bagerhat, the Indian Border Guard Force (BSF) arbitrarily detained six fishermen, including Elias Hossain, Icha, Abul Hossain, Manik Mia, Russell Mia, and Raju Mia. On December 13 at 9 pm, a Bangladeshi college student named Khalek Mahmud Shanto (18), son of Ramzan Ali Kabiraj of Tongbhanga village, was arbitrarily arrested by the Indian Border Guard Force (BSF) at the border area of Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, Founder President of Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), strongly condemns and protests the indiscriminate firing, torture, and arbitrary detention of 6 Bangladeshi nationals, injuring 4 others, and arbitrarily detaining 7 Bangladeshi citizens at the border by BSF in December. He urges the BSF to refrain from this kind of human rights violation in the future.

Apart from this, Advocate Shahanur Islam calls upon the Indian government to take into account every incident of violence that took place on the India-Bangladesh border in the past, including the incidents of border violence that occurred in the last month, and to provide exemplary punishment to the accused BSF members after proper investigation.

The BSF is constantly firing on the border of Bangladesh, killing, injuring, and arbitrarily arresting Bangladeshi citizens without obeying the prevailing international law, which is not acceptable in this century. Therefore, Advocate Shahanur Islam urges BSF to immediately stop incidents of human rights violations, including killings, injuries, torture, and arbitrary detention by Bangladesh and India.
