STATEMENT: JMBF Condemns Hair-Cutting Punishment of Students at School in Munshiganj

Paris, France; February 29, 2024: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) condemns in the strongest terms the recent incident of cutting the hair of nine students for not wearing hijab by a teacher at Syedpur Abdur Rahman School and College in Munshiganj, Bangladesh.

The act of cutting the students' hair as a form of punishment for their religious attire is deeply concerning and constitutes a violation of their fundamental rights and dignity. No student should ever be subjected to such humiliation and discrimination based on their personal choices or beliefs.

JMBF urges the authorities to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the incident and to take exemplary action against the accused teacher. It is imperative that justice is swiftly served and that measures are taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

According to reports from various news sources in Bangladesh on February 29, 2024, the incident occurred during a discussion on religious behavior in a seventh-grade classroom. The teacher, Rumia Sarker, became enraged at the nine students who were not wearing hijab and proceeded to cut their hair with scissors.

The actions of the teacher have caused significant distress and trauma to the affected students and their families. It is unacceptable for educators to abuse their position of authority in this manner and to inflict physical and emotional harm on their students.

JMBF stands in solidarity with the victims of this appalling incident and calls for swift and decisive action to be taken to ensure that justice is served. We urge the authorities to provide support and assistance to the affected students and their families and to take all necessary measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of students in educational institutions across Bangladesh.

JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France reaffirms its commitment to promoting human rights, equality, and justice for all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs or attire.

Thank you.
