On May 11 (Thursday), a discussion meeting was held in Brussels, Belgium with the participation of European human rights lawyers to review the current human rights situation in Bangladesh.
গত ১১ মে (বৃহস্পতিবার) বাংলাদেশের বর্তমান মানবাধিকার পরিস্থিতি পর্যালোচনায় ইউরোপীয় মানবাধিকার আইনজীবীদের অংশগ্রহনে এক আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
Advocate Shahanur Islam, the Founder Secretary-General of JusticeMakers Bangladesh and a prominent human rights lawyer, participated in the discussion meeting as the keynote speaker.

The Human Rights Committee of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), which represents 1 million lawyers from 46 countries on the European continent, organized the discussion at the Hotel Renaissance in Brussels.

Besides, he discussed violence and discrimination against ethnic, religious, social, and sexual minorities, harassment of journalists, lawyers, and human rights activists while performing their professional duties, upcoming parliamentary elections, misuse of Digital Security Act, Article 70 of the Constitution, impartiality of the current Election Commission and previous BNP-Jamaat and Awami League governments.

Moreover, Advocate Shahanur discussed in detail the transparency of elections during the period. He also elaborated on the 2022 report produced by JusticeMakers Bangladesh on violence against lawyers in the course of their professional activities.

According to him, a total of 65 lawyers were victims of various forms of violence in 38 incidents last year, out of which 60 were male and 5 were female lawyers. The forms of violence ranged from physical attacks, assault, beatings, murder, rape, kidnappings, fabricating cases, arrests, threats, intimidation, attempted murder, and judicial harassment.
গত বছর ৩৮টি ঘটনার মোট ৬৫জন আইনজীবী বিভিন্নভাবে সহিংসতার শিকার হয়েছেন, যাদের মধ্যে ৬০জন পুরুষ এবং ৫জন মহিলা আইনজীবী বলে অ্যাডভোকেট শাহানূর তার বক্তব্যে উল্লেখ করেন।
In his speech, Len Viladsen, the European External Action Service (EEAS) South Asia Policy Officer and Head of Bangladesh Desk, said that the European Union is aware of the human rights situation in Bangladesh and is always working for the development and protection of the human rights of the people of Bangladesh.

তাছাড়া, আগামী সাধারণ নির্বাচন অবাধ ও সুষ্ঠু করার লক্ষ্যে ইউরোপিয়ান ইউনিয়ন মাঠ পর্যায়ে নির্বাচন পর্বেক্ষণ করবে তিনি উল্লেখ করেন।
In the president's speech, Stephen von Raumer, the President of the Human Rights Committee of the CCBE, said that an initiative has been taken to formulate an international convention to ensure the professional standard and freedom of lawyers, and the signature and ratification of that convention will be discussed with the government of Bangladesh. So that the lawyers of Bangladesh can conduct their professional activities independently in a free environment.
সভাপতির বক্তব্যে কাউন্সিল অব বারস এন্ড ল’ সোসাইটিস অব ইউরোপ (সিসিবিই)’র মানবাধিকার কমিটির সভাপতি স্টিফেন ভন রাউমার বলেন যে, আইনজীবীদের পেশাগত মর্যাদা স্বাধীনতা নিশ্চিতে একটি আন্তর্জাতিক কনভেনশন প্রণয়নের উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হয়েছে এবং সেই কনভেনশন অনুস্বাক্ষর ও অনুমোদনে বাংলাদেশ সরকারের সাথে আলোচনা করা হবে, যাতে করে বাংলাদেশের আইনজীবীরা মুক্ত পরিবেশে স্বাধীনভাবে তাদের পেশাগত কর্মকাণ্ড পরিচালনা করতে পারে।
Magdalena Witkowska, the President of the Gdansk Bar Association, Poland, CCBE Human Rights Committee Legal Advisor Nathan Roosbeek, London's Essex Court Chamber Barrister Hugh Mercer QC, The Law Society of England and Wales, International Policy Assistant Petra Stojnik, and Bangladeshi human rights activist Comrade Moinuddin Khan living in France were present at the discussion meeting, among others.
