Statement: JMBF Expresses Deep Concern over BSF's Fatal Shooting of Bangladeshi Citizen at Tetulia Border, Panchagarh

Paris, France; October 20, 2023: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), a human rights organization based in France, expresses profound concern regarding the tragic incident of killing a Bangladeshi citizen, Mr. Akkas Ali (35), due to gunfire by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Tetulia border in the Panchagarh district.

JMBF vehemently condemns the killing of Bangladeshi citizen Akkas Ali and urgently calls upon the BSF to cease all instances of border shootings during their duty, aligning with international laws and principles.

Multiple reports from Bangladeshi newspapers indicate that Akkas Ali, the son of Abdus Samad from the Dhamnagar area of Tiranighat Union in Tetulia Upazila, Panchagarh, lost his life due to gunfire from the Indian Border Security Force. On the night of October 17, while attempting to cut the border fence to cross into India, BSF members at the Fari Gang Camp in the Thalrath area targeted them and opened fire, resulting in the tragic death of Akkas Ali. Subsequently, the BSF recovered his body and handed it over to Bangladeshi authorities on October 18, 2023.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, an eminent human rights attorney and the Founding President of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), strongly denounces the lethal shooting of a Bangladeshi civilian by the BSF along the Indo-Bangla border in Panchagarh district. He implores the BSF to abstain from indiscriminate gunfire along the border in subsequent instances.

Moreover, Advocate Shahanur Islam urges the Indian government to approach this incident with the highest level of seriousness and guarantee that the implicated BSF personnel face accountability through a thorough investigation and a trial that aligns with both criminal law and international norms.

Advocate Shahanur Islam emphasizes that the killing of Mr. Akkas Ali by the BSF is not an isolated occurrence; rather, it represents a series of Bangladeshi citizens losing their lives at the hands of the BSF without regard for international laws and principles. He asserts that the killing of Akkas Ali is a clear violation of international human rights law and urges the BSF to immediately reconsider its policies concerning the use of firearms at the border.

Additionally, Advocate Shahanur Islam asks for the immediate provision of physical and psychological assistance, along with appropriate financial compensation, to the bereaved family of the victim. Furthermore, he urges the global community to unite in voicing their concerns and calling for a swift cessation of the use of deadly force by the Indian Border Security Force along the Indo-Bangla border.
