JMBF Calls for an End to Border Shootings by BSF on the Indo-Bangla Border

Paris, France; November 14, 2023: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expresses deep concern regarding the tragic death of Samirul Haque, a 16-year-old Bangladeshi, due to gunfire by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Godagari border in the Rajshahi district on November 09, 2023.

The human rights organization based in France, JMBF, strongly condemns the killing of Samirul Haque and calls for a halt to all border killings by the BSF, in compliance with international laws and principles.

As reported by various Bangladeshi newspapers, on November 9th at noon, Samirul Haque, son of Hasibul Islam from Barinagar village, was fatally shot by the BSF at the Godagari border in Rajshahi. The incident occurred at the Diyar Manikchak border of Charashariadah union in the Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district.

According to local sources, Samirul and others were in the border area to cut grass when they moved to the zero point near border pillar No. 5 of the Dayar Manikchak border. A BSF bullet entered Samirul's right armpit and exited through the left armpit, resulting in his immediate death. Following the incident, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 53 Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Nahid Hossain visited the scene, and the police recovered Samirul's body for post-mortem examination. The body was later handed over to the family after completing legal formalities.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, a prominent human rights lawyer and the Founding President of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), strongly condemns the fatal shooting of a Bangladeshi civilian by the BSF at the Indo-Bangla border in the Rajshahi district. He urges the BSF to cease indiscriminate gunfire towards Bangladeshi citizens at the border, resulting in loss of life.

Furthermore, Advocate Shahanur Islam calls on the Indian government to treat the border killing incident with the utmost seriousness and ensure an end to border killings. He emphasizes the importance of conducting a thorough investigation and a fair trial, compliant with criminal law and international norms, for the BSF personnel involved in this tragic incident. The killing of Samirul Haque highlights the need for promoting peaceful relations and ensuring the protection of human lives along the India-Bangladesh international borders.

Advocate Shahanur Islam notes that the killing of Samirul Haque by the BSF is not an isolated occurrence but part of a series of Bangladeshi citizens losing their lives at the hands of the BSF, disregarding international laws and principles. He urges the BSF to reconsider their policies regarding the use of firearms at the border.

Additionally, Advocate Shahanur Islam calls on both the Bangladeshi and Indian governments to provide physical and psychological support, along with appropriate financial compensation, to the bereaved family. He urges the global community to unite in voicing concerns and calling for a swift cessation of the use of deadly force by the Indian Border Security Force along the Indo-Bangla border.
