Statement: JMBF Demands an End to All Killings by BSF at the Indo-Bangla Border

Paris, France; November 01, 2023: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expresses profound concern regarding the killing of a Bangladeshi citizen, Ainul Haque (32), due to gunfire by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Tetulia border in the Panchagarh district on the early morning of November 01, 2023.

The France-based human rights organization, JMBF, strongly condemns the killing of Ainul Haque and urges an end to all kinds of killings at the Indo-Bangla border by BSF, in accordance with international laws and principles.

According to reports from various Bangladeshi newspapers, on November 1st, early in the morning, Ainul Haque, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi cattle trader, was killed by gunfire from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) near border pillar 448 in Fokirganj village, South Kasemganj, Banglabandha Union, under Tetulia Upazila in Panchagarh district. Ainul Haque, the victim, was a cattle trader from South Kasemganj in Panchagarh. Local residents were alarmed by gunshots in the early hours of November 1st, sparking immediate concern, especially for Ainul Haque's family, who searched for him throughout the night. It was later revealed that Ainul Haque was fatally shot by the BSF near the Indian border. Regrettably, Ainul Haque's body was taken by the BSF, and they have not yet handed over his body to his family.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, a prominent human rights lawyer and the Founding President of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), strongly denounces the lethal shooting of a Bangladeshi civilian by the BSF at the Indo-Bangla border in the Panchagarh district. He urges the BSF to stop indiscriminate gunfire toward Bangladeshi citizens at the border, which has resulted in loss of life.

Moreover, Advocate Shahanur Islam urges the Indian government to treat the border killing incident with the highest level of seriousness and ensure an end to border killings, as well as guarantee that the BSF personnel involved in this killing face legal action through a thorough investigation and a fair trial that complies with both criminal law and international norms. He also emphasizes that the killing of Ainul Haque underscores the importance of promoting peaceful relations and ensuring the protection of human lives along the India-Bangladesh international borders.

Advocate Shahanur Islam points out that the killing of Ainul Haque by the BSF is not an isolated occurrence; rather, it represents a series of Bangladeshi citizens losing their lives at the hands of the BSF without regard for international laws and principles. He asserts that in the last few months, one after another, Bangladeshis have been killed by BSF shootings, which clearly violate international human rights law, and he urges the BSF to immediately reconsider their policies concerning the use of firearms at the border.

Additionally, Advocate Shahanur Islam calls on both the Bangladeshi and Indian governments to ensure physical and psychological support, along with appropriate financial compensation, for the bereaved family of the victim. Furthermore, he urges the global community to unite in voicing their concerns and calling for a swift cessation of the use of deadly force by the Indian Border Security Force along the Indo-Bangla border.

Best Regards,
