Paris, France; November 26, 2023: The France-based human rights organization, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), has expressed profound concern and protest over the cancellation of the scheduled session featuring Bangladeshi transgender woman Ho Chi Minh Islam as a speaker at the Women's Career Carnival. The cancellation was reportedly influenced by pressure from conservative student groups at North South University. JMBF believes that the discriminatory treatment of Ho Chi Minh Islam, solely because she is a transgender woman, is a blatant violation of Bangladesh's Supreme Law Constitution and the universal human rights declared by the United Nations.
Based on various reliable sources, JMBF has learned that on November 24-25, 2023, two organizations, Heroes for All and ISOSHAL, organized the Women's Career Carnival at the North South University campus. The event aimed to empower women through networking, learning, and professional development. Transgender woman and rights activist Ho Chi Minh Islam was scheduled to participate as a speaker in a session on the afternoon of November 24. Her speech was intended to address the inclusion of marginalized communities in the workforce and the creation of an inclusive environment for their work.
Upon the revelation of Ho Chi Minh Islam's invitation as a speaker, reactionary fundamentalist groups initiated propaganda against her through various media, including the Facebook page "Islamic for Practitioner NSU." This misinformation campaign aimed to incite North South University students against Islam, spreading a misinterpretation of religion. Students emailed university authorities, demanding the cancellation of Ho Chi Minh Islam's speech, claiming it promoted homosexuality. They threatened to boycott all university classes if their demands were not met. On November 24, as students began protesting on the North South University campus with banners and festoons, the organizing authorities were compelled to cancel Ho Chi Minh Islam's scheduled session, citing concerns for her safety.
Advocate Shahanur Islam, founder president of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) and human rights lawyer, expressed strong condemnation for preventing Ho Chi Minh Islam from participating in the scheduled session solely because she is a transgender woman. He highlighted the incident as indicative of the escalating influence of reactionary fundamentalist forces in the country. Such incidents are undesirable in educational institutions like universities, which should be spaces for the free exchange of knowledge across diverse ideologies.
JMBF asserts that the forced cancellation of Ho Chi Minh Islam's session is not an isolated incident but a part of the broader trend of violence, torture, and discrimination against sexual minorities in Bangladesh. Since June of this year, reactionary fundamentalist groups have been spreading misinformation to discredit Advocate Shahanur Islam and JMBF in Bangladesh through various media, including Facebook.
Advocate Shahanur Islam promptly demanded swift legal action against those spreading propaganda against sexual minorities and called for exemplary punishment. Simultaneously, the organization urged the enactment and enforcement of the Sexual Minorities Protection and Rights Act by repealing Section 377 of the Penal Code to eliminate all forms of discrimination and establish rights for sexual minorities.

সংবিধান ও জাতিসংঘ ঘোষিত সার্বজনীন মানবাধিকারের সুস্পষ্ট লংঘন বলে জেএমবিএফ মনে করে।
বিভিন্ন নির্ভযোগ্য
সুত্রে জেএমবিএফ জানতে পারে যে, গত ২৪-২৫ নভেম্বর ২০২৩
তারিখে হিরোজ ফর অল এবং আইসোশ্যাল নামক দুইটি প্রতিষ্টান নেটওয়ার্কিং, লার্নিং এবং
পেশাগত উন্নয়নের মাধ্যমে নারীর ক্ষমতায়নের লক্ষ্যে নর্থ সাউথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসে
উইমেনস ক্যারিয়ার
কার্নিভাল আয়োজন করে। উক্ত কার্নিভালে একটি অধিবেশনে গত ২৪ নভেম্বর বিকালে ট্রান্সজেন্ডার
নারী ও অধিকারকর্মী হো চি মিন ইসলামের বক্তা হিসাবে অংশগ্রহণের কথা ছিল।বাংলাদেশের
প্রন্তিক জনগোষ্ঠীর সদস্যদের ন্যায্যতার ভিত্তিতে কিভাবে
কর্মসংস্থানে অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা যায় এবং কি রকম পরিবেশ সৃষ্টি করলে তাদের কাজের জন্য
অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক পরিবেশ নিশ্চিত হয় সে বিষয়ে তাঁর উক্ত কার্নিভালে বক্তব্য রাখার কথা
ছিলো।
উক্ত অনুষ্ঠানে আলোচক হিসেবে ট্রান্সজেন্ডার হোচিমিন ইসলামের আমন্ত্রণের বিষয়টি জানাজানি
হলে গত বেশকিছু দিন ধরে কিছু মৌলবাদী প্রতিক্রিয়াশীল গোষ্ঠী “ইসলামিক
ফর প্রাক্টিশনার এনএসইউ” নামক ফেসবুক পেজসহ বিভিন্ন মাধ্যমে ট্রান্সজেন্ডার
নারী হো চি মিন ইসলামের বিরুদ্ধে অপপ্রচার করতে
থাকে। অপপ্রচারকারীরা তরুণ প্রজন্মের ছাত্রদের লক্ষ করে ধর্মের অপব্যাখ্যা প্রচার করে
ট্রান্সজেন্ডার
নারী হো চি মিন ইসলামের বিরুদ্ধে নর্থ সাউথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়
ছাত্রদের ক্ষেপিয়ে তোলেন। ছাত্ররা নর্থ সাউথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ট্রান্সজেন্ডার নারী
হো চি মিন ইসলামের বক্তব্য প্রদানের মাধ্যমে সমকামীতা বিস্তরণ বন্ধ করতে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়
কর্তৃপক্ষকে ইমেইল করে। অন্যথায় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সকল পরীক্ষায় অংশ গ্রহণ না করার হুমকি
প্রদান করে। এক পর্যায়ে গত ২৪ নভেম্বর দুপুরে ছাত্ররা ব্যানার-ফেস্টুন নিয়ে নর্থ সাউথ
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসে বিক্ষোভ শুরু করলে তাঁর নিরাপত্তার কথা বিবেচনা করে অনুষ্ঠান
আয়োজক কর্তৃপক্ষ ট্রান্সজেন্ডার নারী হো চি মিন ইসলামের জন্য নির্ধারিত অধিবেশন বাতিল
করতে বাধ্য হোন।

মানবাধিকার আইনজীবী শাহানূর ইসলাম তীব্র ক্ষোভ ও নিন্দা প্রকাশ করেছেন। উক্ত ঘটনা দেশে
প্রতিক্রিয়াশীল মৌলবাদী শক্তির ক্রমবর্ধমান উত্থানের প্রতি ইঙ্গিত করে,বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের
মত জায়গায় যেখানে বিভিন্ন মতাদর্শের মাঝে মুক্তভাবে জ্ঞান চর্যার স্থান, সে স্থানে
উক্ত ঘটনা কোনভাবেই কাম্য নয় বলে তিনি মনে করেন।

নারী হওয়ায় হো চি মিন ইসলাম এর জন্য নির্ধারিত অধিবেশন বাতিল করতে বাধ্য হওয়ার ঘটনা
কোন বিচ্ছিন্ন ঘটনা নয়, বরং যৌন সংখ্যালঘুদের বিরুদ্ধে সারা বাংলাদেশে বিগত দিনসমূহে
ঘটে আসা হত্যা, নির্যাতন ও বৈষম্যের অংশ বিশেষ মাত্র বলে জেএমবিএফ মনে করে। এ বছর জুন
মাস থেকে জেএমবিএফ এর প্রতিষ্টাতা সভাপতি ও মানবাধিকার আইনজীবী শাহানূর ইসলাম ও জেএমবিএফ
কে ফেসবুকসহ বিভিন্ন মাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশে নিষিদ্ধ করার জন্য কতিপয় প্রতিক্রিয়াশীল মৌলবাদী
গোষ্ঠী অপপ্রচার চালিয়ে আসছে বলে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি বিবৃতিতে উল্লেখ করে।

অপপ্রচারকারীদের বিরুদ্ধে দ্রুত আইনগত পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করে দৃষ্ঠান্তমূলক শাস্তি প্রদানের
জোড় দাবী করেছে। একই সাথে যৌন সংখ্যালঘুদের প্রতি সকল প্রকার বৈষম্য নিরসন ও অধিকার
প্রতিষ্ঠায় দন্ডবিধির ৩৭৭ ধারা বাতিলপূর্বক যৌন সংখ্যালঘু সুরক্ষা ও অধিকার আইন প্রনয়ণ
ও কার্যকর করার আহ্বান জানিয়েছে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি।
